The snow came in the night and buried the yard to the gatepost, so Dad had to dig a path to the barn with the shovel he uses for the sheep troughs. Mabel went out first, of course, nose down, ploughing the drift as if she was late for something. Ash followed in her tracks, which is the only way Ash ever goes anywhere he didn't choose himself.

When I came out with the feed I found them at the bottom of the lane, sat side by side on the stone wall as if they'd arranged it. Mabel's tail was sweeping the snow flat. Ash had his back against her shoulder, and neither of them looked at me. Behind them the prints ran back up the path to the house, dog and cat stitched together, and every few steps there was a small round hollow where one of them had stopped to think. I stood there longer than the feed could forgive.

Mum says you're coming home for the lambing. Don't say you're not sure. I've kept the spare room aired, and I've been leaving the back door unlatched in case you come up the lane on foot like you used to, with the dog barking at a stranger and the cat pretending not to notice.

Mabel's getting slow in the back legs. Dad says it's just the cold, but I've been carrying the cushion to the stove each morning so she doesn't have to climb. Come and see her before the thaw. Bring your boots, not the city ones.
