The grader had been idling at the top of Bwlch Dulas since six, and Owen Pritchard had given up on the radio. The crew had three days to resurface the hairpin before the snow came over the ridge. The cat was sitting in the middle of the fresh tarmac, not on it, its back to the valley and its face to the machine.

Nobody claimed it. The café at the bottom had been shut since spring, and the farmer's wife at Tyddyn said it came and went with the ewes. Owen had named it Sgwrs, because it seemed to talk with its whole body. Its ears went flat when the drill started, then lifted, and its tail unwound from beneath it and drew a long line down the slope, like someone signing a name they were not yet sure of.

He got out with a flask and sat on the verge at a distance. He did not reach for it. The road belonged to the cat and the sheep and the wind, and he had only come to make it passable. Below, a bus was grinding up the switchbacks with its headlamps on at noon, the driver leaning into every bend as if the road might move under him.

When the cat finally stood, it stretched, looked back once with its whiskers forward, and walked into the bracken without hurrying. Owen waited until the bus had gone past, then lifted the drill lever. Behind him the surface lay black and smooth, and somewhere in the new line of it was a faint curve nobody had asked for. He decided to leave it there.
