Fine line sitting dog on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a sitting dog facing left, drawn as a single continuous black outline with a head tilted slightly upwards. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on the side of the torso with a hand and bracelet visible at the top right of the frame. The photograph is black and white, so the ink appears as dark grey against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Bess was already sitting on the front step when the bell rang at the bottom of Mill Lane. She sat the way collies sit when they have made up their minds about something, back straight, chin lifted, as if someone had ordered her to watch the road and she was too proud to admit she enjoyed it. Mother said the dog had been waiting for Dad since the winter the pit closed and half the men went south on the milk train. He wrote for a while, then at Christmas only, with a parcel of oranges tied in string. Bess never stopped watching the lane.

I went to the city myself at nineteen, to work in a telephone exchange and wear gloves on Sundays. For six years I came home only when the trains were cheap, and each time I walked up from the station with my case knocking my knee, I looked for her on the step before I looked at the house. She was always there, a little greyer, a little slower to get up, but she never once got up for me. She lifted her head and tilted it, the way she did for anything with wheels or boots on the lane, and then she went back to her watching.

The last time I came, the gate was off its hinges and Mother was inside with the kettle. Bess was on the step, and I sat down beside her without saying anything. After a while her head tipped up towards the bend, where a bicycle bell sounded faintly, and she waited there, sure as ever, for a man who was not coming. I put my hand on her warm back and, for the first time, looked where she was looking.
