Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink infinity symbol with curled swirls at each end sits across the lower back. A butterfly is drawn at either outer edge, and small leaf and clover-like shapes sit near the swirls. The thin, even linework is set centrally on smooth skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, boy, and mind that coil of rope, it bites. You want to know why we went round the Two Sisters three times before the Harriet made for Valparaiso? Because the sea had a notion, and a sailor respects a notion he can't argue with. Old Mr Ferris, the mate, swore the current off the northern shoals ran in a figure of eight, two whirlpools joined at the waist. Get caught in one and you'd come out the other side as if you'd never been in it at all.

Third morning, the butterflies came. Pale yellow things, dozens of them, blown out from some island nobody had charted, and they settled on the foremast and on the cook's washing line as if they'd paid for the berth. Ferris caught one in his cap and let it go over the rail. 'They're lost, same as us,' he said. 'Only they've the sense to be cheerful about it.' Then he pointed at the water, and I saw the swirls in our wake curling in and out of each other, and a sprig of clover turning between them, four leaves, green as a sweetheart's ribbon.

The captain wanted to break out and run for open water. Ferris wouldn't have it. He had the helm put over so we followed that clover, slow and patient, round the curl of the first whirl and into the narrow waist where the two currents crossed. The Harriet groaned like an old dog getting up. Then, quite suddenly, the water went flat and blue and the far island was on the larboard bow.

That night I found a clover leaf pressed flat inside the logbook, right where Ferris had written our position. I asked him how it got there. He only tapped the page and said, 'Every loop has its way out, lad. You just have to be willing to go round once more.'
