You find the puppy under the lychgate twenty minutes before the vows, sitting very upright in the wet grass as if someone posted him there. His lead is looped round a bench, and the ribbon meant to hold the rings to his collar has slipped and trails in a puddle. Tomasz, the groom, says the vicar will have a fit if a dog goes up the aisle, so you tell him the dog is going up the aisle, because this is the only creature in Ashcombe who has ever kept a promise.

The nave is narrow and the pews are packed with aunts in hats the colour of sherbet. Halfway down, the puppy stops, sits square in the middle of the runner, and sweeps his tail round in a slow curl across the dust. Nobody moves. Then your sister Ada laughs out loud at the front, and the whole church breathes out at once, and the vicar stops reaching for his glasses. You kneel, unclip the little tin from his collar, and hold it out. He doesn't take it. He noses your palm instead, and his nose is cold and certain, like a question he already knows the answer to.

The rings are not in the tin. You know this because you took them out at breakfast and put them in your own top pocket, where they have been knocking against your ribs all morning. The tin was a decoy, a joke Ada insisted on, and the puppy was never meant to carry anything but himself. When the vicar asks for the rings, you hand him the tin with a straight face, and the aunts gasp, and the puppy stands up and walks off towards the open door as if he has done his job.

At the reception he is under the trestle tables, asleep with his back against Ada's bridal shoes. Somebody has tied a red ribbon round his neck. You think, not for the first time, that every good plan you have ever made has been improved by a dog who sat down when he was told to stay.
