Shaded rose and ornament on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey rose sits at the top of the design, with curled scrollwork beneath it. Below, fine-line ornamental motifs, including a small heart, dotted accents and a pointed arrow-like tip, run down the forearm. The rose uses soft grey shading for its petals, while the lower ornament is drawn in crisp, thin black lines against pale skin and a light background.

The snow came early over the Kessel Pass, and by the time the mule balked at the second bend you had already stopped trusting the path. Your father's map was folded into a square no bigger than a playing card, its creases softened by sweat and three winters of damp. He had drawn the route in pencil, a row of small dots marking each cairn, and at the bottom an arrow pointing down the valley, the way home. You had never once looked at the arrow. You had only ever looked at the rose he kept pressed inside the cover, grey-brown now, from a hut garden above Lenz that he swore never wilted in his memory.

By noon the cloud had swallowed the ridge. You counted cairns the way he taught you, one stone for each breath when the wind dropped, and at the eleventh the dots on the map ran out. The ground fell away on your left into nothing you could see. Then the cloud thinned for a moment and you saw the last cairn, capped with a flat stone, and beside it a narrow slab leaning toward the descent like a finger. Pointed, sharp, dark with lichen. The arrow, exactly as drawn.

You followed it. The mule followed you. Somewhere below, the chapel at Lenz rang the hour, thin and certain in the grey.

At the last switchback you set the rose on the cairn, weighted with a pebble, its petals fanned against the stone. Let the mountain keep it. The arrow pointed down, and so did you.
