Dog portrait in a frame with poppies on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A realistic portrait of a terrier-type dog in three-quarter profile sits inside a black scalloped oval frame. Red poppies, blue cornflowers, white daisies and lavender wrap around the lower left edge of the frame, and a small black and grey bee sits above it. The dog's fur is shaded in warm browns and tans against a soft blue and pink wash, and the tattoo is photographed on pale skin against a dark background.

Dear Nan,

Our Jess has took to sitting at the pit gate again, same as she did when Dad were on the afternoon shift. Mrs Hollis says the dog is daft and will be under the coal wagons one of these days, but I've told her Jess knows the wagons better than the men do. She waits with her chin on her paws and her ears up every time the cage bell goes, and every time it's not him she gives a little sigh I can hear from the back step.
You'll want to know about the poppies. Mr Ainsley's allotment backs onto the rail cutting and the reds came up thick this year, right to the wire. I picked a jamjar of them for the chapel windowsill and Reverend Doyle said they were a fire hazard, which made Mam laugh for the first time since the funeral. The cornflowers are in the bottom of the bank too, blue as Dad's Sunday shirt, and I've put the bee card you sent on the mantel so the kitchen looks properly summer.
Jess had her photo taken at Bell's studio on Saturday, sat on the velvet chair with her face turned to the light the way Dad always made her. Mr Bell says it'll come out in a frame with a lace edge, which seems a bit grand for a terrier, but Mam says she's earned it. I'll post you a copy with the next lot of tea.
Don't fret about the shift money. We're managing. Tell Grandad I've kept the gate shut.
Love, Eliza
