Dog portrait in ornate frame with roses
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A tan dog with large dark eyes and upright ears is shown head on, framed in an ornate gold oval with a pale blue background. Two pink roses with green leaves sit at the bottom of the design. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth colour blending across the fur, frame and petals.

Mrs Hollis came up the stairs of the studio on Tuesday with the dog under one arm and the frame under the other, and Edwin Crane, who had painted three hundred spaniels and one tortoise, understood at once that the frame was the difficult part.

"She wants the roses," said Mrs Hollis's maid, who had carried the frame up in its brown paper and now stood in the doorway smelling of wet wool. "Pink ones. Her late husband's garden had nothing but pink."
Crane sat the chihuahua on a velvet cushion the colour of old plums. It was the smallest dog he had ever been asked to paint and the most certain of itself, ears up like a pair of listening tin cups, eyes fixed on the window as though the pigeons owed it money. He mixed a wash of cerulean and a little white for the oval behind its head, because the frame had come with a pale blue silk backing and Mrs Hollis had insisted the two be matched exactly.
For three weeks he painted. The fur took the longest, a thousand small strokes of ochre and burnt sienna, and the eyes took a day each. The roses he hurried, then slowed, then hurried again, until the maid came back to ask whether the dog was finished, because Mrs Hollis had begun to wonder if the roses might be the real subject.
On the last morning he set the portrait beside the frame and saw that the dog was looking not at the window but at the roses at its feet, as if it had been waiting all along for someone to tell it where to look. He did not change a thing. He wrapped it in brown paper and sent it down the stairs.
