Sitting chocolate Labrador on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of a sitting chocolate Labrador, shown from the front with its head slightly tilted and its tail curling to one side. The fur is built up with soft shading and fine detail around the eyes, nose and ears, with a light wash of brown tone. The small design sits centrally on the ankle against a plain, softly lit background.

The thaw had not come by the Tuesday, so you walked the lower field with the dog at your heel, breath going up white in front of both of you. Biscuit was a chocolate Labrador with a grey muzzle he would not admit to, and in six winters the cold had never once changed his manners. At the gate he sat, every time, and tilted his head at you as if you were the one who had been slow.

Old Mrs Pryce had left the farm to her nephew, and the nephew had left the ewes to you. Three of them were lambing early in the north barn, where the roof leaked onto the straw. You knelt in the muck with a torch in your teeth and a lamb half out, and Biscuit lay with his chin on his paws by the door, ears pricked, his tail sweeping the floor in slow curls each time a ewe groaned.
By four the light was going orange over the hedges and the first lamb was up, wobbling, nosing for milk. The second one did not stand. You rubbed it with a sack, then with your palms, then gave up and sat back against the feed bin. Biscuit padded over, put his big head in your lap and held still, the way he did when he knew a thing was over before you did.
Nobody came up the lane that night. You carried the dead lamb out to the hedge bottom and came back to find the dog still sitting by the barn door, facing the gate, waiting for a quad bike that was never going to appear. You whistled once. He turned, tail curling, and came to you the long way round, because that was how he always came when he thought you needed the company.
