Faceted dog portrait on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the head and ears of a short-coated brown dog, with the face built from angular, faceted planes of orange, amber and dark brown. Bold black outlines define the ears and muzzle, and the dark nose and yellow-brown eyes stand out against the warm body colour. The design is centred on the skin with plain, unpatterned skin around it.

Dear Ruth,

I know you said not to go back to the canal towpath after dark, but Biscuit has decided the rules don't apply to him. Last Thursday he slipped the lead outside the Co-op on Mill Road and I found him at half eleven under the railway arch, nose pressed to the gap where the bricks have given way, as if he'd known all along the stray was in there. It was a fox, I think. Or a very thin cat. Either way, he came out with grit in his eyebrows and looked at me like I was the one who'd been lost.
The city at night belongs to the bins and the bakery vans, and he moves through it like he's been briefed. The lamps along Histon Road turn his coat the colour of toffee and the amber of a pub window, and every corner shows a different plane of him: ear, cheek, the dark point of his nose. Mrs Adeyemi from number nine says he looks like a painting someone sketched in a hurry and then decided to keep. I told her he's just a dog with opinions about bins.
Anyway, I've started taking the long way home past the bus shelter where the night buses turn round. Yesterday a man in a grey anorak asked if the dog was for sale. I said no. He said he'd lost one just like it in February. I didn't know what to say, so I gave him a biscuit from my pocket and we stood there while the 4 pulled out, neither of us quite ready to leave.
Come up at Easter. He's missed you, though he'd never admit it.
Love, Nell
