Dolci sogni script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the Italian phrase 'Dolci sogni.' written in flowing black copperplate-style script on a plain white background. The letterforms have strong contrast between thick and thin strokes, with swashes on the capital D and the descender of the g. It is a monochrome line drawing with no shading, and the phrase sits centred across two lines.

The herald wanted the blessing cut from the bottom of the night proclamation, and he said so while I was still trimming my quill. Two words, he said, were wasted ink. Nobody in Vell Harbour had ever been asked to dream on the king's coin, so why should the king pay for dreaming?

I did not argue. I took the nib I keep for capitals, the one with the split tip that makes a hair-fine stroke on the upstroke and a fat belly on the down, and I wrote the D so its loop curled back on itself like a cat settling in a basket. Dolci, I wrote, and then sogni, the g dropping its long tail beneath the line the way a fishing hook drops into deep water. The herald read it twice and could find nothing in it to strike out.

By morning the proclamation was pinned to forty doors, and the fishwives were humming it on the quay. Nobody mentioned the blessing. Nobody needed to. Old Brannoc, who has not slept properly since his wife went north, told me he had dreamed of the sea with the tide running the right way for once.

I still letter the decrees every night in the same hand, and I have stopped trimming the swashes. The ink dries faster on the thick strokes, so by the time the candle gutters the flourish under the g has bled a little into the margin, a thin dark line running off the page towards the window, where the town lies asleep beneath it.
