A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodora had copied the same line forty times before the ink in her pen finally ran dry. Her uncle's letter-writing stall stood under the arcade in Bologna, between a shoe mender and a man who sold lottery tickets, and every afternoon customers came with their clumsy words and their true feelings. She wrote what they could not. Most wanted something tender. The old count wanted only his wife's name in flourishes, nothing else.

On Thursdays she worked in the garden behind the arcade, where the owner let her use the stone bench under the fig tree. The light came through the leaves in pieces, and she practised the looping capital on spoiled sheets, the L curling back on itself like a fern unrolling. Her uncle said the hand was only a trick of the wrist. He had never managed a swash without rehearsing it a hundred times first.

One afternoon a young clerk came with a folded sheet and a request he could not say aloud. He wanted a line about life being a dream, because the woman he loved had told him he never seemed fully awake. Teodora wrote it slowly, giving every tail room to breathe. When she handed it back, he read it twice and asked what it meant. She said it depended on whether you were the one sleeping or the one watching.

He left the sheet open on the bench. The fig leaves moved over the words, and she let it stay there, because some sentences look better in the open air.
