A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, pull your chairs in closer, because nobody under sixty believes this bit, and my nan swore on her life that it happened. The spring the Ashby line flooded, a sign-writer called Tolliver got off the 9.14 with a ladder, a tin of black enamel and a temper. The council had paid him to letter the new name board for platform two. He hung the board upside down, painted it that way, then stood back with his brush and said that the words were only right when you had to work for them.

Mrs Pryce, the stationmaster, wanted it turned round by the Friday. Tolliver wouldn't budge. He said the sign said what it said, and the full stop at the end was the only honest thing on the whole station. So she left it, muttering, and the board stayed the wrong way up through the wet March and the dry April after.

Then people started tilting their heads. A schoolboy read it aloud, slowly, the way you'd read a telegram. A woman with a pram stopped dead, laughed, and missed her connection. A man in a grey coat who had caught the same train to the same office for eleven years read it three times, stepped off at Ashby for the first time in his life, and was seen buying a fishing rod in the market that afternoon.

The board's still up there, the paint blistered and the letters gone a bit grey at the edges. Mrs Pryce is long retired, but I've seen her in the early light, standing on platform two with her head on one side, reading it the right way round.
