Doll face tattoo on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Colour · Photo

A large-eyed doll face covers the back of the hand, with freckles, a small nose and closed pink lips. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with glossy blue irises, lashes and blended skin tones that follow the contours of the knuckles. Bangs and dark grey hair frame the face, with muted purple tones in the strands against a blue denim background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Lusk drove the dolls out along the Salt Flat road in a Bedford van with a cracked windscreen, and she had one rule for them. No doll rode with its eyes shut. Her husband Tom had laughed at it the year she painted the first lashes, the year she bought blue glass from a widower in Barnsley and fixed each iris behind its lid with a dab of resin. He had laughed at her setting them upright along the dashboard so they could watch the road go under them.

The freckled one she kept back for herself, though she never said why. It was the last thing she finished before the well at Carrow Cross dried up. In March a girl with a plaster on her chin walked out from the village with a jam jar of pennies and asked for the doll with the sleepy face. Ada gave it to her for nothing and felt its eyes follow the child all the way down the lane, which was a foolish thing to feel about a bit of glass.

In June the van died a mile past the cattle grid. The heat rose off the tarmac in sheets, and Tom walked off toward the village for water and did not come back by dark. Ada sat in the cab with the dashboard dolls, and in the last of the light she saw that every one of them had turned its head west, toward the place where the road bent out of sight.

She walked after him with a torch. At the bend she found the girl instead, sitting on the verge with the freckled doll in her lap and the jam jar beside her. "It won't shut," the girl said. "I tried all night." Ada took it back. The glass was warm from the child's hands, and when she set it on the dashboard it looked straight down the empty road, as though it had been waiting for someone to come along the track.
