Cartoon pin-up with a teddy dog on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon pin-up woman with black curled hair, a red hair bow and a winking expression sits beside a white teddy dog with a red bow. She wears a red polka dot dress with white trim and red heels, all drawn with bold black outlines and flat fills. Red, green, yellow, pink and white ink dominate, and the design fills the calf with a simple, centred composition.

Dear Vi, the boards by the piano at the Crown Palais have lifted again, and Lou the trombonist caught his shoe in the gap twice before the interval, so you'll know the sort of night it was. The place smelled of Brylcreem and wet coats, and the cloakroom man, Mr Abernathy, had Biscuit sitting on his counter the whole evening like a ticket stub nobody had collected. Biscuit is his dog, a white thing with a bow tied so neatly you'd think it was the only tidy object in Hollow Ferris.

He followed me to the edge of the floor when the dance contest started, and I suppose that's how it was decided. I had my red spotted frock on, the one you said made me look like a tin of peppermints, and I gave the judges my best wink while the band went round for the third time. Biscuit sat right at the foot of the stage and wagged at every step I took. The lot of them looked at him rather than me, which I count as a victory for the dog.

We didn't win the cup. The cup went to the Pemberton sisters, who I'm told practised in a hayloft. But when the lights came up Mr Abernathy pressed a half crown into my glove and said the dog had been very good company and I ought to have him for the rest of the week. I haven't the faintest idea what he expects me to do with a dog in a red bow, but he's asleep at the foot of my bed now, with my heels lined up beside him like a pair of tired guests.

Mind the board by the piano when you come on Saturday. I'll save you a seat by the stage, and Biscuit will be there to inspect your shoes. Your loving sister, Dot.
