Dilys Okafor had driven the Route 9 mail van across the Nevada flats for eleven years and had never once been asked to carry a cat. So when a white one with a pink ribbon sat down in the middle of the road, blinking at her windscreen as if she owed it money, she stopped the van and climbed out to argue.

The cat wasn't bothered by the heat or the engine. It walked around the van twice, then settled on top of the parcel bound for the Hollis Cafe. When she reached for it, it went stiff and fixed her with those enormous blue eyes, whiskers quivering, until she gave up and set it back down. Its bow was still perfect, pink as a boiled sweet, though the road dust had got into everything else.

She found the tag only when she emptied the post bag. A brown envelope addressed to Mrs Ada Pell, Lantern Creek, care of whoever was going east, and inside a single line in careful capitals: SHE WILL GO WHERE SHE LIKES. TUNA AT SAND WASH AND SHE'LL COME HOME. Dilys sighed, drove to Sand Wash, and found a tin of tuna in the glovebox that she had no memory of buying.

The cat leapt from the passenger seat the moment they pulled in, trotted past the diner and sat at the back step as if it had an appointment. An old man in a sun-bleached cap opened the door, looked at the cat, then at her, and said, "Took your time." Dilys never did learn who Ada Pell was. But every Thursday after that, the cat was waiting by the Sand Wash turn-off, bow fresh and whiskers combed, and she always stopped.
