Stylised wolf head with swirling linework

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised wolf head faces left, drawn in bold black lines with sweeping curls and tapering strokes that extend into the tail-like swirls at the lower left. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the design sits on a plain pale grey background. The composition is a single centred figure with the swirls balancing the head.

Dear Tom,

The wolf came off the Waltzer last Tuesday, the one with the cracked tail, and Mr Hadley says it's yours if you come down to Ashford and fetch it before the lorry goes north. I told him you'd never haul a thing that size on the train, so he's keeping it under the tarpaulin behind the generator. You know the one: the head turned back over its shoulder, all that black scrollwork coming off its ears like smoke off a match.

Don't ask me how it's done. Dad would have painted it in one go with a fitch and a steady hand, no pencil marks, the lines running out to nothing. I sat on the step of the lorry for an hour trying to copy the curl at the bottom and got it wrong four times before it sat right. There's a trick to it. You let the brush run and then lift off before it can think.

Mum asked after you at the tea urn on Sunday. She didn't say much, but she kept touching the wolf's ear on the side panel as if it might still be warm.

Come and see it before the fair packs up. You can have the first go at fixing the tail, and if you're lucky Hadley will let you stand on the platform after dark when the lamps come on and the whole thing turns.

Love, Nell
