Mrs Okonedo kept the lamp lit in the window of flat fourteen, the one at the top of Halloran House where the lift had given up in the nineties and never been fixed. It watches who comes up the stairs with their hands full and who goes down with their pockets empty.

Nobody believed her until the winter the boiler failed and the whole block went cold together. Young Tomasz from twelve went up to fourteen with a torch and a bag of coal he had no business carrying. He found her sitting in the dark with a tin of biscuits open on her knee, and a drawing pinned above the kettle: a single eye, ringed with little dots like a clock face, and inside it a spiral that went round and round until it reached the middle and stopped.

She told him the spiral was the path of the stairs, every landing turning into the next, and that whoever looked long enough into the centre would see the flat they had been hiding from. Tomasz looked. He saw his mother's kitchen, and his own bed, and a bag of coal in the corner that he was not sure he had brought up at all.

He went home and lit the boiler with the coal. Mrs Okonedo left the lamp burning all the same, and in the morning the dots on the drawing had moved one place round the clock, which is how she knew the eye had been and gone to check on the rest of them.
