Doodle creatures on two ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet rest on black flip-flops against a wooden floor. The left foot has a horned, boxy figure with stick legs, and the right foot has a small round creature with a single eye, both drawn in simple black outline. The ink is black only, and the tattoos are small and centred on the ankles against plain skin.

You arrive at the fair in Halesworth the week the big wheel loses a bolt, and by Thursday the whole Dodgems crew knows your name because you are the one who draws on the back of the ticket rolls. Nobody asked you to. The ride boss, Mr Pell, pays in cash and chips, and his grandson Dilly sits on an upturned crate and watches you sketch with a biro that has chewed its end.

Dilly has a monster of his own. He calls it Gruff, a boxy thing with horns like a pair of kettle handles and legs that stop short of the ground. Every evening he draws it again on the cardboard sign for the candyfloss stall. Gruff is always cross. You tell him the horns should point the other way if he wants it to look brave, and he tells you brave is overrated.

On the last night the generator fails and the lights die across the field. In the dark you hear Dilly crying behind the cages, and you find him holding a torch with a cracked lens. He shows you a round little creature he has drawn on the back of his hand, one eye, no mouth. "That one's Peep," he says. "Peep never gets frightened, because he only has the one eye to be frightened with."

You take the biro and draw Peep smaller, then Gruff beside him, and by morning the whole fair is packing up around two monsters walking off the edge of a crate. Neither of them is afraid of the dark anymore.
