Matching stick figure wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two near-identical tattoos of simple stick figures in dresses, each holding one end of a long, thin black line that stretches across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the figures are drawn in a minimal, hand-drawn style. Ink is almost entirely black, with a single small red mark on the right-hand figure's head, and the tattoos sit on pale skin with a white cloth at the top edge of the frame.

The kite was Mam's old blue diamond with the split tail, and it would only rise if somebody ran. Nell ran. I stood at the top of Cobb Hill with the reel braced against my hip and watched her go down the slope in her striped frock, arms out, shrieking at the gulls, until the string came tight and the kite lifted off the grass as if it had been waiting for permission.

We had one rule that summer: nobody lets go. We'd made it up after the Dawson boys cut our line on the bus station railings and the kite went into the harbour. Nell said a line held by two people couldn't be broken, which was the kind of thing she said when she was sure of nothing else. I believed her anyway. The string ran between our hands like a promise pulled taut across the whole sky.
Then the wind turned. A ladybird landed in Nell's hair, a bright red dot, and she tipped her head to watch it walk, and for one second her fingers loosened. I felt the reel jerk in my palm. I grabbed for her, not the string, and the kite swung sideways over the cliff edge and dropped toward the rocks.
We didn't speak on the walk home. At the gate Nell pulled a length of spare line from her pocket, knotted one end around her wrist and held out the other. I took it without a word. Neither of us went anywhere without the other after that.
