The last bus out of Buchanan Street went round the one-way system twice tonight, because the driver said the lights at Cowcaddens had been sulking since Tuesday. I didn't mind. I sat at the back with my bag on my knee and watched the city slide past in orange smears, thinking of you at four years old, drawing loops on the steamed-up car window and telling me they were roads that never ended.

The bakery on Argyle Street had me on the late shift again, lifting trays of rolls out of the oven while Mr Shah sang along to the radio with his mouth full of crumbs. Around two I made a cup of tea and stood by the back door, where the cold comes in under the frame. Someone on the stairs of the flats opposite was carrying a sleepy boy up to bed, one arm under his knees and the other flat across his back. I stood there with my tea going cold, because that was the shape I had carried you in for years, and I hadn't noticed when I stopped.

I've enclosed the ticket stub from the bus, and the postcard of the Kelvin Hall you said you wanted. Keep the loops as they are. The curls on the ends always make me think of two people leaning against the same wall, and I like that the word Daughter sits where it does, as if it has been running to catch up.

Come home at Easter. The Cowcaddens lights should be fixed by then, and I'll ride the whole loop with you until the driver gets fed up and throws us off at the depot.
