Small cat silhouette on a lower leg
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a sitting cat in profile, with pointed ears and a tail curling up at the base, sits on the lower leg above the ankle. The black linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the design is set against plain pale skin. The frame is taken close up, with denim clothing at the top and a wooden floor in the background.

The cat sat on the fourteenth-floor landing every morning at seven, facing the window with its back to the stairwell, as though it was waiting for a bus that had stopped running years ago. Nobody on Harlow House claimed it. Mrs Pryce in 9 said it was a stray, Mr Dahl in 12 swore it had worn a collar once, and the lad in 14 fed it cold chips and called it Sergeant.

I was the night cleaner then, and my shift ended with the mop bucket going back in the cupboard at six. I'd climb the last flight with the sky going orange over the car park and find it there, sitting neat and thin against the glass, ears pricked at the motorway lights. I never touched it. I'd stand a minute and trace its shape in the film on the window with one finger: the ears, the dip of the back, the tail curling round to the floor like a question nobody had got round to asking.
In February the council put scaffolding up for the cladding and the sill was boarded over, and the cat went wherever cats go when the view is taken away. Nobody saw it leave. The men on the scaffold said they'd spotted a grey shape on the roof edge once, but they said that about everything.
When the boards came down in April, the outside of the glass had been washed clean, but on the inside, where the cat had sat for so long, a faint ghost of its outline still showed in the grease. I didn't wipe it off. I still stop there at six and trace it from the inside, and my finger fits the curl of its tail exactly.
