Doodle symbols across a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is photographed palm-down against grey tarmac, with small black symbols across the fingers and back of the hand. The marks include an eye, a sun with rays, spirals, stars, a crescent moon, a key, triangles and hearts, drawn with simple, uneven lines. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the composition fills the frame from the fingertips to the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every Sunday that August, Nell's gran sat on the back step with a tin of Quality Street and a biro, and every Sunday the garden grew a little more crowded with marks. The sun came first, drawn over the bean canes so the beans would ripen. The key was for the shed, which had been padlocked since Grandad died, though nobody could say what was in it. Nell copied the symbols into the margins of her library book until the librarian asked her to stop.

On the last Sunday before the removal van, Gran took Nell's hand in both of hers and drew over the back of it: a spiral, a crescent moon, a small star that went slightly wrong at one point, and an eye that looked faintly surprised. Nell wanted to know what they were for. "Keeping track," Gran said. "Of the things that are yours, so you know where you left them." Then she wrote 999 on Nell's middle finger in her careful schoolroom hand. "That's for emergencies only. Not for missing a stop on the 14."

The flat in Hartlepool had a window over the sink and no garden at all, just a square of grey tarmac where the bins went. On the third morning Nell scrubbed at her knuckles and found the spiral had faded to a brown ghost. She sat on the edge of the bath with the biro and went over it again, slowly, the way Gran had, then stared at the little black key lying on the windowsill where she had put it down on the first day.
