It's gone two and the building hums the way it does when the pumps are the only thing still awake. I'm on the night round at the aquarium by the river, checking gauges while the tanks glow blue along the corridor. The blue tang in tank nine has been circling the same corner since teatime, nose to the glass, as if the wall might open if she asked politely enough.

Mrs Okafor from the cafe says the fish is just bored. I told her fish don't get bored, they get stuck, and she laughed and said that was the same thing in a different hat. I think she is right, which is why I'm writing instead of ringing. You never liked the phone after ten.

Last week I found a grease pencil stub in the staff drawer and wrote on the outside of the tank, low down where the visitors can't see: just keep swimming. It was meant as a joke. The fish hasn't stopped circling, but she has started turning a little wider each lap, and I have decided that counts for something.

I'm not asking you to come back. I'm telling you the tang is still going round, and I'll be here at six when the lights come up. Ring me if you want. The number is the same. Love, Jess.
