Dory the blue tang on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style blue tang fish, shown facing right with large eyes and a smile, is tattooed on the inner wrist. Smooth shading gives the blue body depth, with yellow and orange fins and small outlined bubbles rising above it. The fish sits off-centre on pale skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You swim the reef of Pelagria with the tide at your back and the sun a coin above you, and you have forgotten, again, why you set out. The sea anemones of the Lower Sallows wave at you the way they always do. You wave back with a fin and keep going, because going is the one thing you have never forgotten how to do.

The Queen of Pelagria, a grouper of great dignity and worse hearing, has sent a crab named Ottoline to fetch you. Ottoline carries a pearl the size of a plum on a string of kelp, and a message that she recites twice, once to you and once to the rock behind you. The message says the kingdom's last tide-glass has cracked and only a fish who can remember the way to the Deep Mouth can carry the pieces home. You nod. You have a feeling you know the way. The feeling is the only map you own.

So you swim, and the bubbles rise from your gills in neat little rings, and each one pops and takes one more thing with it. The Deep Mouth is a trench where the light gives up. You forget the crab. You forget the pearl. You forget your own name for a while, and then a bubble drifts past your eye and you remember the trick the old turtle taught you: say the thing you need aloud, over and over, to the water.

You say 'glass, glass, home' until the words turn blue like you. At the edge of the trench a shard of tide-glass glints in the silt, and you pick it up in your mouth, and the bubbles that rise now carry light. Ottoline is waiting at the top, pincers folded. 'You remembered,' she says. You don't, not really. But the glass does, and so the kingdom does, and that is enough for a fish who has never once looked back.
