Dot-art frog on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A frog is shown in profile on the outer leg, with its limbs splayed and a circular motif on its body. The frog is outlined in black and filled with yellow, olive and green, with dotted and crosshatched patterns creating texture. Green and black dots radiate around the frog, which sits against lightly freckled skin.

Every break time someone lay flat on the bank and counted the spots on her back. Green dots for the flies she'd eaten, black for the ones who'd got away. Nobody agreed on the total. Haddow banned the whole business after Priya Nair came back from the field with mud to her elbows and a jam jar of tadpoles nobody had asked for.
Then the rain came for three days and the pond rose over the fence and into the hall. On the Friday Dorothy was found sitting in the middle of the dinner ladies' trestle, perfectly calm, while Mrs Oakley screamed about the custard. Haddow carried her out in his cupped hands like a communion wafer and swore she bit him.
I heard last spring that she's still going, out past the new fence and down the lane towards the pond that's now a car park. So raise a glass to her. If you see a green dot on the tarmac after rain, that's probably her, still counting us.
