Dotted chain anklet with diamond charms
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and lower leg show a tattoo of a dotted chain circling the ankle, with two small diamond-shaped charms hanging from it, one below the chain and one to the side. The linework is fine and made of individual dots, and the design is in black ink only. The ankle sits near the centre of the frame against a plain wooden floor and pale wall, with painted red toenails visible.

Ada found the chart still tacked to the back of the chandlery door, its pencilled soundings gone soft at the edges. Somebody had run a line of tiny dots across the bay, from the slipway out to the old wreck, and set two diamonds where the channel bent. Nobody on the quay would own to it.

"That's a safe route," said Tom Harrow from behind the rope bins, not looking up from his splicing. "Only a fool goes straight at the Mare's Back on the half tide." He had been a pilot's boy before the war and remembered the dots as his father's work, pricked out with a compass point on a Sunday, one at a time, so the line could be walked in the dark. Ada took the chart down and held it to the window. The dots were so fine she had to tilt her head to see them, and so even that the sea seemed to have agreed to them.
She found a note in the corner in the same careful hand: keep the chain taut, the tide is kinder to a steady line. The second diamond had been drawn over a scrap of tide table, as if the keeper had wanted it found by someone who knew to look. Ada folded the chart into her coat pocket. Next morning she walked the route at low water, counting her steps between the marks, and at the second diamond she stopped where a lobster pot lay half-sunk in the weed.
She left the pot where it was. That evening she pinned the chart back on the door, the second diamond turned towards the sea, and went to find her boots.
