Matching red string tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two people's wrists sit side by side, each with a thin red line running across the skin and a small looped knot shape beneath it. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the red ink is the only colour in the frame. The plain wooden floor and dark fabric in the background keep the focus on the matching designs.

The ewes had been lambing since Candlemas, and Maud Harrow had not slept more than four hours together in a fortnight. When the thaw came hard across Coldharbour Farm, the lane turned to slurry and the gate hinge froze solid, and still she walked the top field each dawn with a bucket of meal on her hip, counting heads against the tally her brother had scratched on the barn door.

Her brother Tom was in the far paddock with the tractor that wouldn't start. She had told him to leave it. He had told her the same. Neither of them had said the thing that sat between them on the kitchen table since their mother's funeral, which was a length of red wool dyed with madder root the autumn before she died, cut into two pieces and never tied.

Maud found the ewe in the hollow behind the hawthorn, down on her side, a single lamb steaming in the straw. She knelt in the wet, cleared its nose, and the lamb coughed and shook its head. Her fingers were so cold she could barely feel the knot she tied afterwards around its neck to mark it for the tally, a small looped bow in red.

By the time she got back to the farmhouse the light was going pale over the ridge. Tom stood at the sink with his sleeves rolled, the second piece of wool already in his hands. He didn't look up. He just held out the other end, and she took it, and they stood there in the cold kitchen tying it between them until the knot was pulled tight and neither of them could pretend it was anything but done.
