Small cat outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a cream duvet with a grey floral pattern, showing a tiny tattoo on the outer ankle near the heel. The tattoo is a simple black outline of a cat's head with pointed ears, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The palette is monochrome and the composition is a close, slightly angled view of the foot against the busy bedding.

Marjorie Pell could never draw a cat that looked like it meant it, so for thirty-one years she drew the same one: a round head, two pointed ears, and a single line that never lifted from the paper. She did it in blue biro in the margins of manifests at the customs shed on Grimsby's King George Dock, while the cranes outside swung Danish butter and Baltic timber over the quay.

Dennis Harte, her supervisor, said the cats made the forms look unserious. The regional office agreed in a memo nobody read. Marjorie kept drawing them. Clerks on placement learned to look for the cat before they looked for the tonnage, and a haulier once rang to ask whether his consignment was cleared because there was a cat on the sheet. It was, she told him, as far as she was concerned.

When the shed closed in March, the forms went into grey boxes bound for a warehouse near Scunthorpe. On her last afternoon Marjorie went through the final stack and found that Dennis had been adding cats of his own, lopsided and furious, each one squashed into a corner beside a stamp. He had never said a word. She sat on an upturned crate and drew one more in the margin of her resignation letter, its head turned towards the window.
