The sextant had belonged to Hal's father, and it still smelled of brass polish and the tobacco tin he kept beside it. Nell held it the way she had been shown, thumb on the drum, eye to the horizon, waiting for the sky to darken over the Southern Ocean. Forty-one days out from Valparaíso, and the only thing anyone aboard the Maud Tennant trusted more than the chronometer was the sea itself.

Mr Tulloch had lost his nerve after the lamp failed on the third night. He paced the quarterdeck with his hands behind his back and kept asking her what she could see. She told him the truth. Small stars were scattered thick as spray, and the bright ones hung like lanterns on a line. Hal had taught her their names when they were children on the Mersey, lying on the wall by the ferry steps. There was one she had never liked, a hollow star with no fire in it, only an outline drawn around nothing. Hal said that one was the navigator's friend, because it never flickered and never lied.
She took three sights before the clouds thinned. The first two disagreed with the dead reckoning by a good ten miles, and Tulloch's mouth tightened. On the third she found the hollow star low in the north-west, steady as a pin, and worked the figures twice on the slate with her cold fingers. The bearing gave them a course, and the ship came round to it with a groan of timber.
At first light a line of gulls came out of the grey and wheeled over the bow. Tulloch read her numbers, said nothing, and then went below to wake the watch. Nell closed the sextant in its box, opened the log, and wrote the position in her own hand, with a small hollow star drawn in the margin beside it.
