Three small stars on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised toward the top of the frame, showing the inner wrist. Three solid black star shapes of different sizes sit close together on the wrist, with one larger star at the lower left and two smaller stars above and to the right. The image is black and white against a plain grey background, and the ink reads as dense black fill with softly textured edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The generator coughed twice and died at ten past eleven, so the big wheel stopped with eleven people still hanging at the top of it, and Nell Garrity had to climb onto the cab of the lorry to see them properly. Her father's voice came up through the field, telling her to mind the wing mirror. She minded it. From the roof she could see the whole site: the dark dodgem pen, the still gondolas, the row of caravans with their awnings rolled tight against the wind coming off the Fens.

Three stars had come out above the flatness, one big and low to the left, two smaller ones up and to the right. Her gran used to point at them from the step of the van when Nell was small and frightened of the dark. Gran had called them the Scatter on some nights and the Pram Handle on others, and Nell had never settled which name was right, so she used neither. She thumbed the torch on, climbed down, and went to the control box at the back of the wheel, the one she had been told a hundred times never to touch.

The switch clicked. Somewhere behind the rides the generator caught, shuddered, and roared, and the lights came up in a long rattle of bulbs. Eleven people cheered from the top of the wheel. Her father said nothing at all. He only walked over with his hands in his jacket pockets and looked up at the sky, then at her, and back at the sky.

"Three of them," he said eventually. "Your gran would have wanted you to give them a name."

"Plenty of time for that," Nell said, and went to find the spare fuses.
