Dotted star line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin dotted line curves diagonally up the inner forearm, with four small star or asterisk shapes spaced along it, the largest near the top end. The linework is fine and delicate, with the dots and stars in black ink that appears slightly soft on the skin. The pale arm sits against a dark wooden table, with a small jar of sugar and a sprig of purple flowers in the background.

The ovens had been lit since three, and Marisol had learned to trust the dark outside the back window more than the clock on the wall. She pulled the last tray of sourdough from the rack and set it on the cooling board, tapping each loaf with two fingers to hear whether it sounded hollow. Her uncle Teo used to say the bread told you everything if you let it. Tonight it told her the flour from the Ashby mill was running wet again.

By half past four the street lamps on Carrow Lane had gone pale, and a boy from the flats came in for his usual twist of cinnamon buns, counting coins out of a sock. He asked whether the bakery had a name for the little row of stars Teo had chalked above the door years ago. Marisol had never bothered to ask. She said they were for luck, which was what everyone said when they didn't know. The boy nodded as if that settled it, and left with the buns held against his chest like something that might escape.

After he had gone she climbed the step ladder and wiped the chalk away with a damp cloth, then stopped. The stars were still there under the grime, faint and dotted, each one a little smaller than the last, leading up toward the lintel where the paint had flaked. She traced them with her thumb, wondering how many mornings Teo had stood in this exact spot, dusting flour off his sleeves and making a path out of nothing. The oven timer rang. She left the cloth on the sill and went to find out what the bread had to say.
