Small chevron arrows on the wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a hand and wrist showing a small tattoo of stacked chevron arrows, drawn in thin black linework. The arrows point in alternating directions in two short rows, and the tattoo sits near the wrist. A braided bronze bracelet is worn just above it, and the background is softly blurred.

Nobody on the seventh floor of Halewood House could find flat 714 without help, because the numbers ran backwards on every landing and the lifts only ever stopped on the odd ones. So when Mrs Okonedo's grandson came up from Bristol with a suitcase and no idea where he was going, I went down to meet him at the bins with a pot of white paint and a stencil I'd cut from a cereal box.

I started in the lobby, where the doors hissed shut behind him, and drew a pair of chevrons on the concrete pointing towards the stairwell. Then two more on the first landing, then on the wall beside the fire door. Always two short rows, the top pair pointing one way and the bottom pair the other, so that anyone climbing would feel pulled up and back at once. Dennis from the flat below asked if I'd gone soft. I told him the council could send me a bill for the paint.

By the time I reached the seventh floor it was past eleven and my knees had opinions. The boy was sitting on his case in the corridor, phone glowing in his hand, staring at the doors as if one of them might owe him an explanation. I pointed at the arrows on the lino beside his shoe. He followed them to 714 without a word, and I went home by the stairs, the long way down.

At the bottom I found I'd left one stencil taped to the post by the bins, its arrows pointing up.
