Dear Ada, the chart you sent came on Tuesday with the coffee stain across Orion, so I have copied the stars out again by hand on the back of the tide tables. Mr Penhallow says the dotted line is a route, not a constellation at all, a course a fishing smack would steer by when the fog came down over the bar. I told him the men at the Crown would dispute that, and he laughed so hard he had to sit on the step.

The lamp was lit early again last night because the cloud sat on the headland like a wet blanket. I climbed the tower with the flask and counted the flashes out to the Swan Rock, one, two, three, the way you taught me before you went up to London. Somewhere past the third flash a boat's lantern came round the point, low and yellow, then stopped and waited for the next one before it trusted the water.

I have decided to stop pretending I do not look for you on that page. Lighthouse keeping is mostly waiting for things to come back in. When the tide turns I will walk down to the slip and wait for the post cart, and if there is nothing from you I will still be there with the lamp oil and the kettle, counting.

Write soon, even if it is only a line of stars and a time. I will know which way to steer.
