Dotwork circles and bands on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A two-panel photograph shows a pale forearm and hand with a dotwork geometric tattoo. Concentric circles sit on the forearm, with bands of stippled dots that grow lighter towards the elbow, and a curling ring wraps over the wrist onto the back of the hand in the upper panel. The image is in black and grey against a dark background, with the lower panel showing the palm side of the same arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been wedging clay since six, and Mr Okonedo had not yet said a single word about her hands. "Again," he said at last, and pushed the lump back across the bench with the side of his palm. She shoved it into a ball the way he'd shown her, heel of the hand, turn, push, until the grey stopped sticking to her fingers.

The wheel in the corner of the Stoke yard had been his father's, kicked by a motor for forty years and then by a boy who only wanted paying. Nell put her foot to the treadle. The wheel gathered speed with a sound like a long breath, and when she pressed her thumbs into the spinning mass it rose, wobbled, and rose again. "Lean into it," he said. "Don't fight it. Let the clay tell you where the middle is."

She tried six times before the cylinder stood still. Each failure left rings in the wet surface where the wheel had dragged it off true, circles drawn by a mistake, one inside another, running out to the rim. On the seventh she braced her elbows against her ribs and felt the clay find its own centre, quiet under her palms like a held note.

Next morning the bowl was leather-hard, and she trimmed its foot with a wire loop. Mr Okonedo tapped the rim with a fingernail, listened, and nodded. In the kiln the glaze would sink and thin toward the lip, dark at the base and pale as a winter field at the edge, just as he had promised. Nell set the bowl on the shelf with the others, turned it so its rings faced the window, and went to put the kettle on.
