Curved abstract tattoo on the forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand and forearm with a tattoo of a solid, tapering curved shape with two thinner curved lines beside it. The solid fill has soft grey shading that fades toward the edges, and the outlines are clean. The ink is black and grey on a plain light background, with the tattoo placed near the wrist.

The old pennant on the tallest mast tore loose from its ropes, snapped taut once like a sail taking the wind, and went out over the field with its two pale streamers behind it.

We watched until it was a dark comma above the dyke. Dad climbed down, set the bucket on the grass, and handed me the stencil Grandad had cut from card in 1958. "Keep that," he said. "The sea can have the rest." I folded the card into my coat pocket and felt its edges through the lining, sharp as a line drawn fresh.
