Dotwork circle tattoo on a finger
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand with glossy black nail polish, showing a small black tattoo on the back of one finger near the knuckle. The design is built from dots arranged in a ring around a larger circular element, with no shading or colour. The plain grey background and soft light keep the focus on the tattoo.

The council sent two men in orange vests on a Tuesday to pull the old cage out. I stood in the lobby with a flask of tea I never drank and watched them prise the panel loose. Behind the brass was a wheel of wires gone green at the joints, and a sticker in biro: Mick, 1974, don't touch the fourteenth.
Mick, whoever he was, had been right about the fourteenth. I asked the older man if I could keep the panel. He shrugged and said it was scrap either way, so I carried it home on the bus across my knees, eleven stops that felt like a lift in themselves.
Three weeks later I sat in a chair on Mill Road while a man with steady hands inked a ring of dots around a small circle, one gap left where the dead bulb used to be. Now when the bus stops at the bottom of Harrow Point, I count the lights in my head anyway, and nobody in the lobby asks why I'm smiling at the doors.
