Outline heart tattoo on the side of a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outlined in a single thin black line sits on the side of a finger near the knuckle. The hand is posed against weathered wooden boards, with dark matte nails, gold band rings and a gold bracelet visible. The composition is close and centred on the hand, with the tattoo shown in sharp focus.

Sit nearer, the lot of you, where the gaslight reaches. This is the tale of Tobias Quill, who mended clocks in Pennyfold Lane when the city still hung its lamps on chains. He had one trick, and every watchman in the ward knew it: he could draw a heart in a single unbroken line, never lifting his pen, and the line would close exactly where it began.

One wet night in November a woman came down the lane carrying a broken music box under her arm. She did not want it fixed. She wanted the lid to shut for good, she said, and she would pay in silver for a seal. Tobias turned the box over and found a heart scratched in pencil on its underside, a single line that had wandered and never closed. He said nothing about it. He only asked her to hold the lamp steady.
He drew the heart on the brass with a needle, one line from the top lobe down round to the point and back, and he did not lift his hand. The watchman outside swore the clock tower stopped while he worked. When Tobias finished, the line had closed. The lid shut with a click like a door in an empty house, and the woman went off into the fog with nothing playing at all.
Tobias kept the box on his shelf for forty years. Nobody ever asked him to open it, and he never did. Some nights, if you stand at the bottom of Pennyfold Lane and the fog is thin, you can hear one note wanting out.
