Small fist tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a clenched fist sits on the side of a finger, with the knuckles and fingers drawn in dark outline. The shading is soft and grey, and a thin line extends from the bottom of the fist. The plain, light background is out of focus, which keeps the attention on the tattoo and the hand.

Dear Tom,

The gulls have taken over the bins behind the Harbour Inn again, and Mrs Gunn says the ferry will be late till Thursday because the swell is running over the slipway. I went down anyway this morning with your kite string still in the drawer by the stove, the one you tied to the gatepost the summer you were nine. I stood where the wind comes off the sound and let it pull at my sleeve. You always said the wind here was a fist that never opened.

Dad's boat is on the hard now. Ewan Riddell has offered to look at the engine, though he'd rather be paid in mackerel than in shillings, which is no great hardship to him. The men have been talking in the shop about the price of diesel and the new quota men from the mainland, and every time someone raises a voice Mum presses her hand flat on the counter and says nothing, which is worse than shouting. I keep thinking you would have made them laugh.

I found the tin of brass buttons you used to sell to the summer visitors. There are still eleven left. I have put them in the tea caddy so they don't rattle.

The kite string is the thing I keep coming back to. I could not bring myself to throw it out, and I could not bring myself to fly it either. This afternoon I tied one end to the rail at the end of the pier and let the rest run out, and for a minute it went taut and hard as wire, and then it let go all at once. Come home when you can. The wind is still here, and so am I.

Love, Mags
