Ship's wheel and compass star on fingers
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest over a dark leather surface, with a small ship's wheel tattoo on the upper part of one finger and a compass star tattoo on a finger of the other hand. Both designs are rendered in solid black ink with bold outlines and simple fill, and no colour is visible. The close framing places the two small tattoos at the centre, with the fingernails and knuckles softly lit.

Ottilie had the wheel off the Mairi Dun before the tide turned, its spokes furred with green weed and one of them snapped clean through. She carried it up the shingle on her shoulder, past the chandlery, where her uncle Ewan was already dragging the shutters closed against the wind coming off Scarra Sound.

"You'll not mend that by dinner," he said, not looking up from his ledger. "Brass takes a day to soften."
"Then I'll mend it by tomorrow." She set the wheel on the bench between a tin of tar and a coil of tarred line, and pressed the broken spoke back into its socket until it sat flush. Ewan had taught her that a wheel remembers the hand that last turned it. She believed him less each year, and more each time a boat came home.
The old binnacle compass from the Mairi Dun sat on the shelf above the stove, its brass gone dull, its card cracked along one edge. The needle had pointed north for forty years and never once towards the island where Ottilie was born, and Ewan said that was the whole purpose of it. A needle did not care where you wanted to be. It only showed you where the sea was.
She tapped the glass. The needle shivered, settled, and swung past the window towards the grey water, past the skerries, to a point where no ship could safely go. Ottilie lifted the wheel, turned it once in her palms, and began to file the new spoke true.
