Sun and crescent moon on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown with two small tattoos, one on each of two adjacent fingers. The left tattoo is an outlined sun with wavy rays, and the right is a crescent moon with a small five-pointed star inside its curve. The thin black linework is crisp against the skin, and the close framing keeps the tattoos central with a dark background.

Dear Marta,

The guard at the Ruše crossing took my passport, held it under the strip light, and asked what I had to declare. I said nothing, which was true, and he kept looking at the rings on my hand until the queue behind me began to mutter. You would have laughed. He thought the sun and moon were some kind of code. I told him they were only a reminder of Papa's two shifts at the tannery, one in daylight and one after dark, so the house was never empty of him.
You always took the sun side when we crossed the river at Maribor, because you said the water looked kinder under a bright sky, and I took the moon because I never slept well anyway. Last week the wind off the Drava was so cold that my fingers went white at the knuckles, and I kept turning the little star inside the curve of the moon with my thumb, the way you used to on the night bus to Ptuj.
Please leave the blue coat out for me if it is still in the cupboard under the stairs. The woman at the kiosk says the weather over the hills will turn by Thursday, and I would rather arrive looking like someone who planned for it.
Your sister, Nina
