Matching semicolon tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small semicolon tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two arms, shown side by side against a grey fabric background. Each mark is a solid black dot above a comma-shaped stroke, drawn with fine, even linework and no shading. The ink is solid black on light skin, and the close framing keeps the composition simple and centred on the two marks.

The mason at Harrowgate had cut a full stop into the gatehouse lintel the year the old lord died, and the village took it for a bad omen. Nobody would say what came after, so they spoke of the castle as finished. Then Ida Penrose, who kept the tally of the stores in the ruined chapel, asked the mason's boy why the work had stopped.

"Lord's orders," the boy said. "Nothing after the dot. He wants the line closed."

Ida went up to the broken keep that night with a lantern and a heel of cold bread. Beside the full stop she found a loose block where someone had started a mark years before and lost their nerve. She knelt and cut a small dot above, and under it a curved comma, so the mark would not end the sentence but hold it open, like a door left on the latch.

In the morning the lord's men came with ropes to pull the lintel down. They stopped at the gate, looked up, and found they could not read the stone without thinking of the sentence still going on behind it. They left it standing. Ida's tally book from that winter is kept in the chapel, and in the margin of every page there is the same small mark, waiting for the next line.
