A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had caught its edge on the pass that winter, and by the second week of frost the shepherds were coming down the wrong side of the mountain. Ioana was the only one in Salcea who could mend it. Her grandmother had cut lace from tin for the church doors, and the old woman had handed down her patience along with the shears, so that Ioana could work a hole no wider than a barley grain without breathing.

She climbed to the col with a leather roll of punches and a pot of black pitch, and the moon hung so low over the rock that she could have stepped onto its horn. She began at the torn tip. Each swirl she cut was a road the mules knew, and each dot a lamp in a window at the foot of the valley. The wind took the filings and carried them off like wasps. When she reached the middle she set a small sun, the only piece she had not been taught, and the wind stopped to watch.

Afterwards she sat in the snow with her fingers stiff and bleeding, waiting for the moon to lift. It rose slowly, rimmed in fine black scrollwork that threw a lattice of shadow across the pass. Below, a dog barked, then a bell, then the slow knock of hooves on stone. Eleven mules came round the bend, and not one of them slipped.

Ioana walked down by their light and did not look back, because the sun in the crescent was hers to keep and a thing that is yours does not need watching. In the morning the valley said the moon had never looked so neat. Her grandmother, had she lived to see it, would have said the shears had done the work and the girl had only held them.
