Gold scale pattern on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A repeating pattern of gold fan-shaped scales runs diagonally across the inner forearm, with fine radiating lines inside each arc. The metallic sheen suggests a temporary gold foil tattoo rather than traditional ink. Metal bracelets and a watch sit at the wrist against a grey floor.

Sit down, you lot, and mind the nets. You want to know about Mavis Pell and the gold scales, so listen. Her father cut stamps for the chandlers on Quay Street, brass blocks engraved with fans, the same fan that every scallop off Skerry Bay wears on its back. He pressed them into gilt for the lanterns and the church door, and the children followed him for the offcuts, little curled gold ribbons that caught the lamplight.

When the old man died, Mavis kept the bench. The town wanted their names pressed in gold for the regatta, and she did it for a penny a name, then a farthing, then nothing at all for the widows. One November a stranger came off the night ferry with a sea-chest and asked for a hundred scales, each the size of a thumbnail, to be laid on something he would not name. She cut them. She asked no questions, because in Skerry Bay questions go out with the tide and never come back.
He paid in silver and walked up the hill without looking back. Three weeks later the fishermen's wives found the scales on the harbour wall, gold fans set in a line from the slipway to the lighthouse, and on every one was pressed the same small word in her father's hand: home. Nobody ever learned where the stranger went.
The tide still brings in a gold fan now and then, washed clean and bright as a coin. My grandmother used to say that when one turns up on the shingle, somebody on the far side of the water is finally finding the way back.
