Dotwork moon on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A full moon is drawn as a thin black outline circle, with its darker patches built up from dense stippled dots. The lighter areas are left as bare skin, so the moon reads as bright against the forearm. The image is a close, straight-on crop of the forearm against a plain light background.

Ansel drove the water cart along the Kessock road, where the sand filled the ruts again before sunrise. Each night he watered his mules at Dunmere well, and each night the well was dry except for one cupful at the bottom, which the old carters said was not for drinking.

One night near the dark of the month, a woman was sitting on the well rim with a round white stone in her lap. Its face was pocked with small holes, like a loaf the mice had got into. "Carry me to Tallow Pass," she said, "and I will let the well run." Ansel laughed at her, but he lifted her up anyway, and the stone was heavier than any sack of salt he had ever loaded.
All the way across the flats the wheels sank deeper, and the mules leaned into their collars until the foam came off their necks. At the pass the woman stepped down and took the stone from the cart. Where it had sat there was only a fine grey dust, and when Ansel looked up, the moon hung over the flats, whole and bright, with the dark marks on its face where the wind had worn it smooth.
He went back to Dunmere at dawn. The well was brimming to its lip, cold and clear. Carters still tell it that if you water your team on a dark night and leave one cupful for the sky, the moon will sit a little lower on the rim, and wait for you to ask.
