World map outline on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of the world map sits across the side of the ribs, showing the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia as separate landmasses. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The photo is taken at an angle with a purple bra top above and a bathroom background, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame.

Keep your hands near the fire, traveller, the pass takes the warmth off a man the way a thief takes purses. You asked for the tale of the mapmaker who drew the world without lifting his pen. The inns all know the bones of it, but the bones are not the marrow.

Old Hesketh Brand kept a workshop above the salt quay at Morrow Bay, and the sea captains paid him to make charts that did not lie. He had one rule, pinned above his desk: never lift the pen. A coast drawn in pieces, he said, is a coast you can doubt. So he drew every shore in a single run of black ink, the north-west of the western lands, down through the narrow neck of land, round the cold edge of the north, the long coast of the great eastern country, the horn of the southern continent, and the ink never broke.
The Crown sent a clerk to buy the chart for the royal ships. The clerk unrolled it and frowned. 'Where are the seams? Where is the ocean?' Hesketh told him the ocean was everything the line did not touch. The clerk offered forty silver and Hesketh refused. When the clerk pressed, the old man took up his pen and drew one last stroke from the southern island back toward his own harbour, so the coast closed on itself like a ring around the sea.
The king's navigators sailed by that chart for years and never found the edge of it. Hesketh died with his hand resting on the paper, and when they lifted it the line was dry and whole. Put your finger on the coast of any map you own, traveller, and follow it slowly. You will come back to where you started, and you will not remember lifting anything.
