Mind the step by the lamp room, it's worn through where the gulls have been sitting since before your grandfather was breeched. Sit there, where the wind can't find you. I'll tell it the way my mother told it to me, with the sea doing its usual business underneath.

There was a girl called Hetty Pargeter who kept the light at Scarrow Point when her father's chest gave out. Every dawn she climbed the hundred and twelve stairs to snuff the lamp, and every dawn she counted the boats coming in past the rocks. One morning in March she counted one short. The Brisk Lark, out of Penhallow, was late by a whole tide, and the fog lay on the water like wet wool. She put the lamp back to full and rang the bell until her palms bled, and the sun came up behind the cloud as if someone had lifted a lid off a pot.

The Lark came in at half past seven with her sails torn and her crew singing, and a gull the colour of old pewter rode the mast-top the whole way home. Hetty swore it was the same bird that had perched on the rail every morning since her father fell ill. Her father swore it was a lie told to make the girl feel brave. Neither of them was ever proved right, which is how most good stories keep their shape.

So when you see the sun coming up over the harbour wall, and a single bird cutting across it low and straight, don't go hunting for the lamp. Just nod to it, and go and put the kettle on.
