Fine line poppies on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two poppy flowers on thin stems, drawn in a single continuous fine black line with no shading. The flower heads are open and slightly overlapping, and the stems trail downwards towards the wrist. The photo is black and white against a plain light background, with the design centred on the forearm.

You kneel at the far end of the walled garden with the trowel still in your hand, because Mrs Ibbotson has told you the poppies only come up where the ground has been turned over, and it is the one rule she has ever given you without a reason. Behind you the glasshouse ticks as the sun slides off it. The bed is a pale oblong of rubble and loam where the old cold frames stood until the council carted them away in March.

She hands you a paper packet, the envelope gone soft as cloth. "Scatter them on the surface," she says. "Don't cover them. They want the light to tell them when to wake." You ask how long it takes. She says the same as everything worth having: longer than you planned, and then all at once. You press the seeds into the dust with your thumb and think of the letter she keeps in the bureau drawer, the one she has never answered and never thrown away.
Weeks later the stems come up thin as pulled thread, and the buds nod on them before they open. You come back at dusk and find her standing in the bed in her wellingtons, not picking anything, only looking. The flowers have opened and crumpled and opened again, their petals lying over one another like loose pages. "Look how they fold," she says. "You never see the stem start. It just goes up and keeps going."
When you pull the trowel out, the hole it leaves is the same shape as the line the stems draw, one stroke with no lifting. Mrs Ibbotson watches you look at it. You don't fill it in. You leave it open to the sky and let the rain find it.
