Single-line face tattoo on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a stylised face in profile, with a simple eye, nose and mouth and a flowing outline for the hair or head shape. The linework is even and thin, with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin against a white top and a plain bedsheet. The composition is a close, slightly angled shot of the leg with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame.

Nobody at Hollis Park believed a face could be drawn without the pen leaving the paper, so I made it my trade to prove them wrong. Three shillings for a portrait, the whole thing in one unbroken run, and a ha'penny more if you sat still long enough for me to get the ear right. My booth was the green caravan between the dodgems and the tea urn, and the canvas flap smelled of paraffin and wet sawdust.

The lad who came in on the Thursday wanted his sweetheart done in profile. He talked the whole time, about the big wheel and the lights and the girl who sold toffee apples, and I told him to hush or the line would wander. He didn't hush. So I drew her from memory instead, the way my mother used to draw the fishing boats at Whitby, never lifting the nib, following the curve of a brow down to a mouth that was half smiling and half thinking better of it, with a loose tangle of hair trailing off behind like smoke.
When the fair packed up on the Sunday, he left a shilling on the stool and a note folded small: she said it looked like her when she was cross. I kept that note in the tin with the tent pegs. Years on, I still hear the generator coughing up the hill and the scratch of a pen making one line that never once comes off the page.
