A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tent goes up in a wet field outside Swindon with two poles short, and you are the one holding the guide rope while Mrs Penrose swears at the canvas in three languages, none of them the ones on the posters. Nobody has been paid since the spring. The lions went to a sanctuary in Wales in March, the trapeze rigging was sold for scrap, and the only act left that still draws a crowd is the one that was never trained to do anything but look sorry for itself: Mr Biscuit, a fawn pug with a black saddle across his back and a tail that curls like the last question on a form.

Biscuit knows one trick. You taught it to him with liver cake and a great deal of patience. He turns his head slowly toward the ringside, the way a magistrate turns to a defendant, and then he sits. The children in the front row, eleven of them if you count the one asleep on his father's shoulder, have never seen anything so solemn. Mrs Penrose says the trick is worth two pounds a head, and she is right, because nobody in Wiltshire expects a pug to do anything but eat.

On the final night the tent is half empty. You stand in the ring, which is more mud than sawdust, and Biscuit walks out alone. He doesn't turn his head. He walks to the centre pole, lies down in the wet, and rolls until his black saddle is smeared gold by the lamp. Then he sits up and looks at you, waiting for the liver cake you forgot to bring.

Mrs Penrose counts the takings on an upturned crate and finds exactly the price of one more fortnight's feed. She pushes the coins across to you and keeps the biscuit tin for herself. Biscuit follows you to the gate, tail up, a question mark nobody in the field has the heart to answer.
